Abstract

Surveillance of antiretroviral drug resistance in the lower northern region with genotypic detection of anti-HIV resistant strains using next generation sequencing technology for which no such data exists. It is a retrospective study. From March 2018 to September 2020, descriptive statistics were used for those who had results of a complete genotypic test for HIV drug resistance in 614 HIV-infected patients of 13,461 cases tested for HIV Viral load.

The findings revealed that CRF01_AE was a major type in HIVDR cases with viral load ranging from 10,001-100,000 copies/ml and a prevalence of HIVDR was 3.06% (412 cases). In most cases, the HIVDR strain resist to NRTIs and NNRTIs (256 cases) and the mutation site correlated to NRTIs resistance was M184 and additional hits at TAM-1 and TAM-2. Genetic changes responsible for NNRTs, PIs, INSTIs resistances were K103, I54, A128, respectively. Only one of HIVDR sample harbored a pan-resistant phenotype.

The use of NGS technology will be a tool to help monitor the outcome of antiretroviral therapy and help the information to make an action plan to achieve the national strategy.
