Abstract

The study aimed to investigate the factors associated with the health literacy (HL) of individuals within the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, Non-binary and others diverse (LGBTIQN+) communities. Utilizing secondary data from online survey conducted as part of the Investigation of Health Literacy among Individuals with Gender and Sexual Diversity, the total sample consisted of 454 cases. The study was carried out between September and October 2020. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression. The results revealed that education, gender identity, and the presence of a peer group had significant statistical associations with LGBTIQN+ Health literacy (HL). Individuals holding a bachelor's degree obtained a lower LGBTIQN+ HL score comparted to those with a postgraduate degree (p<0.05). Similarly, tomboys or transmen had lower LGBTIQN+ HL score than gay men (p<0.05), while katoey/trans women achieved a higher LGBTIQN+ HL score than gay men (p <0.05). Moreover, those who exclusively had LGBTIQN+ friends scored lower in LGBTIQN+ HL than those with friends of all genders (p<0.05), and individuals without LGBTIQN+ friends scored lower in LGBTIQN+ HL than those with friends of all genders (p<0.05). The results underscore the significance of enhancing health literacy within the LGBTIQN+ community, particularly among specific sub-population groups such as lesbians, tomboys, or transmen.
