วิตามินอีเป็นวิตามินที่ละลายในไขมัน มีความจำเป็นในกระบวนการสำคัญของร่างกาย วิตามินอีพบในอาหารหลากหลายชนิด ภาวะขาดวิตามินอีพบได้ในผู้ป่วยที่มีปัญหาการดูดซึมไขมันหรือกระบวนการเมแทบอลิซึมของวิตามินอีผิดปกติ ภาวะขาดวิตามินอีในผู้ใหญ่พบได้ไม่บ่อยและอาจมีอาการไม่ชัดเจน อย่างไรก็ตาม ในบางภาวะอาจสัมพันธ์กับการขาดวิตามินอีอย่างรุนแรง นำมาซึ่งความเสียหายถาวรต่อระบบประสาทและสมอง การตระหนักถึงและให้การรักษาอย่างทันท่วงทีสามารถป้องกันความเจ็บป่วยและทุพพลภาพถาวรได้
