Vitamin E: Biochemistry and Clinical Significance
Keywords:
Vitamin E, abetalipoproteinemia, homozygous hypobetalipoproteinemia, ataxia with vitamin E deficiency, hemolytic anemiaAbstract
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin which is essential for several vital biochemical processes in the human body and usually found in many natural food sources. Vitamin E deficiency is usually accompanied by fat malabsorption syndrome or abnormal vitamin E metabolism. Vitamin E deficiency is rare in adults and could manifest itself in the form of mild anemia and nonspecific neurological symptoms to severe and permanent neurological damage, which leads to irreversible morbidity. Early diagnosis and early treatment of a vitamin E deficiency could prevent the permanent morbidity.
