The Development of Nutrition Counseling Skills and Attitude as A Part of A Teaching Technique by Using Standardized Patient in Role Play

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of role play with standardized patients on nutrition counseling skill and learners’ attiude. Teaching tools included ten lectures with four sessions of role-play with standardized patient in the course. Assessment tools included 1) a student nutrition counseling skill evaluation form 2) an instructor nutrition counseling skill evaluation form and 3) questionnaires for student attitude on the technique of using standardized patient in role-play. Subjects were third-year dietetic students. The data collection included distributing the self-assessment nutrition counseling skill at week 0, 6, and 15 while the trained-instructors assessment only at week 6 and 15 same as students’ attitude test. The result of self-evaluating on their counseling skill (out of 40points) indicated in different level between 3 times with a significant value at 0.05 [n=27, At week 0 was 17.15±6.66, at week6 was 19.46±7.64, and at week 15 was 22.04±7.39, p=0.023] In addition, the result between week 6 and 15, which were assessed by instructors, illustrated that score increased significantly. [At week6 was 29.74 ± 4.28, and at week 15 was 32.30 ± 4.26, p<0.001] In the attitude test, the level of satisfaction on the role-play technique with a standardized patient showed with a significant increase. [At week6 was 3.00 ± 0.75, and at week 15 was 3.38 ±064, p=0.03]. In conclusion, role-play with a standardized patient may be an effective teaching method to improve nutrition counseling skills and learners’ attitude for dietetic students.
