Acrodermatitis enteropathica is an uncommonly severe form of zinc deficiency manifesting with periorificial skin lesions, hair loss, and diarrhea. In adults, its acquired form was reported in those with zinc loss via the gastrointestinal tract due to maldigestion and malabsorption.
We reported a case of a 39-year-old man, with a 10-year history of chronic pancreatitis that previously underwent a Whipple operation 5 years ago, presented with chronic intermittent steatorrhea for years, which subsequently progressed to watery diarrhea for 2 months. He developed multiple skin rashes compatible with acrodermatits enteropathica, as well as other signs of malnutrition. His conditions improved after treatment of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth together with zinc, pancreatic enzyme supplementation and nutritional support.
