Foods and Dietary Patterns Associated with the Development of Depression

Abstract

Depression is a serious medical condition that has become increasingly common across the world. Although food choices are not a major factor in the development of the condition, evidence has shown that some foods are significantly linked with depression. This article aims to review the types of food and dietary patterns that were associated with the development of depression. As a result, types of food that were inversely associated with the risk of depression were vegetables, fruits, tea, coffee and fish. While other foods that showed a positive association included red or processed meat and foods with a high sugar content. With respect to dietary patterns, a Mediterranean diet and other traditional diets with similar food patterns were associated with the lower risk of depression while a western diet associated with a higher risk. However, it should be noted that most of the results were obtained from observational studies, which are known to have several limitations. Further interventional studies in this area are strongly recommended.
