Stability of Magnesium Sulfate 40 mg/ml in 5% Dextrose in Water injection 1,000 ml
Keywords:
stability, magnesium, eclampsia, pre-eclampsiaAbstract
Magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) is one of the first-line therapies in Pre-eclampsia and eclampsia. The study revealed that these symptoms were associated with magnesium deficiency in pregnancy. Thus, MgSO4 40 mg/ml in 5% Dextrose in Water (D5W) 1,000 ml has been widely used in hospitals, however this solution is not commercially available in Thailand. Therefore, hospital pharmacists have a role in the responsibility to prepare this solution and the desire is to have 1 month Beyond-Use date (BUD) at 2-8 ˚C. Thusly, there is no study of the storage stability of this solution. This study was performed to confirm the storage stability on day 0 and weekly until the 4th week, then every two weeks until the 8th week of preparation. Three samples were taken each time for a physical stability test, color of the solutions and precipitations, and chemical stability test. The quantitative measurement of Magnesium ion (Mg++) was the focus in this study as an active agent by Colorimetric end point method and a Sterility test in The United States Pharmacopeia; USP41. The results demonstrated that there is no significant change in color and precipitation, as well as no degradation of the quantity of Mg++ in this solution at the 8th week (56 days) of storage
