Abstract

A successful weight loss can potentially reduce several complications of obesity. This case-control study aimed to study the factors associated with the weight loss success of obese patients at an obesity
clinic, Srinagarind Hospital, Facultyof Medicine, Khon Kaen University. A data base of obese patients who underwent an obesity clinic from January 1, 2019, through January 1, 2023, was retrospective. The number of calculated sample size was 260 (130 cases and 130 controls). Sampling was done using systematic sampling method. The relationship between variables was analyzed with bivariable analysis and the association of factors with successful weight loss was analyzed using multiple logistic regression, controlling for the confounders. Result, the response rate of cases and controls was100 percent. Four factors, significantly associated with successful weight loss (p-value < 0.05) after controlling for confounders, were obstructive sleep apnea (AOR = 3.959, 95%CI: 1.340 – 11.695), exercise frequency 3 times/week or more (AOR = 3.464, 95%CI: 1.201 – 9.997), eating duration more than 20 minutes/meal (AOR = 3.811, 95%CI: 1.020 – 14.247), and no sweetened beverage/smoothies or sugary drinks consumption (AOR = 4.354, 95%CI: 1.695 – 11.184). Health personnel should do more screening for obstructive sleep apnea to raise awareness of weight loss.
The frequent exercise, longer duration of eating and reduced sugary drinks/smoothies intake should be
recommended.
