Abstract

Research instruments are tools used for collecting data. Using quality tools make research more reliable and well accepted by research users. However, researchers may use instruments developed by others if the   available research instruments are congruent with concepts and theories related to the variables used, and they were well developed and had been tested for acceptable validity and reliability. If the researchers decided to use instruments from overseas, they need to consider for cultural differences as well as the quality of translation in order to make sure the validity of the new instruments.  This paper presents steps of instrument development, research instrument validation, criteria for choosing instruments developed by others, and translation of instruments developed from overseas. These may help researchers to develop quality instruments.
