Abstract

Abstract: This quasi-experimental research aimed to examine the effects of rehabilitation program of joints for patients with stroke by family caregivers. Forty-four persons with stroke and their family caregivers resided in Bangkok were purposively selected and divided into two groups. The experimental group with 22 patients received the rehabilitation program of joint based on Bandura’s self- efficacy theory for 8 weeks. The control group with 22 patients received routine nursing care. Data were collected using four questionnaires: a demographic questionnaire, knowledge and skill of rehabilitation of joints, Barthel Index of Activities of Daily Living (ADL), and range of motion assessment. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t- test, Independent t-test, Wilcoxon Signed-Ranks test and Mann-Whitney U test. Findings revealed that participating in the joints rehabilitation program, family caregivers of the patients in the experimental group had significantly higher mean score of knowledge and skills of rehabilitation of joints than before receiving the program (t = -4.29, p < .001; t = -6.61, p < .001) and the control group (t = -3.35, p < .01; t = -4.42, p < .001). The experiment group had average score of the Barthel Activities of Daily Living (ADL) higher than before the program and the control group, but not significant (z = -1.39, p > .05; z = -0.05, p > .05). In the experimental group, the average range of motion of shoulder joint in abduction and flexion positions were better than before the program (z = -2.98, p < .01; z = -3.11, p < .01). There were no statistically significant in the other joints and in the control group (p > .05). The rehabilitation program of joints should be applied for family caregivers in order to increase knowledge and skills of rehabilitation of joints resulting in increasing range of motion of joints in persons with stroke.
