Abstract

This quasi-experimental research, the posttest-only design with nonequivalent groups, aimed to compare recovery of patients with bipolar disorder of the experimental group receiving the recovery promotion program and the control group receiving usual nursing care. Sixty-six patients with bipolar disorder, admitted in Somdet Chaopraya Institute of Psychiatry, were matched pared by ages and illness durations, and then were randomly assigned into the experimental and the control groups. Research instruments comprised of Recovery Promotion Program; Global Assessment Function; Thai Young Mania rating scale; Montgomery Asberg Deprsssion rating scale; and the Thai Mental Health Recovery scale.  All scales were examined for content validity by the panel of 5 experts.  The Cronbach’s Alpha reliability of the Thai Mental Health Recovery scale was .86. The t-test was used in data analysis. The results showed that the recovery of patients with bipolar disorder receiving the recovery promotion program was significantly higher ( =101.09, SD =9.65 than those receiving usual nursing caring (  =76.48, SD =10.77) at the level of p=.05. It is suggested that the recovery promotion program could be used to improve the quality of mental health nursing service for persons with bipolar patients in psychiatric hospitals. The competencies of advance practice nurse with the nursing care team should be developed.
