Development and Implementation of Practice Guideline for Communication with Intubated Patients in an Intensive Care Unit
Main Article Content
Abstract
This implementation research aimed to develop and implement guidelines for communication between nurses and intubated patients in a critical care unit of a university hospital. Participants of the study included: 1) Thirty ICU nurses and 2) Fifty-four critically ill patients. The implementation research process had two phases based on the framework proposed by the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). The first phase was to develop practice guidelines; and the second phase was to implement the guidelines. Assessment of communication effectiveness was reported by nurses and patients. Results showed that: the developed practice guideline for communicating with intubated patients comprising of 5 categories: 1) assessing the patient’s condition; 2) providing information and suggestions about communication methods; 3) recommendations of communication methods; 4) evaluation of communication; and 5) quality control of the practice guidelines. Results of the guidelines
implementation showed that most of the nurses and patients reported communication effectiveness of both overall and item scores at good levels.
