Abstract

Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes. If it is not early diagnosed and treated, there is at risk of vision loss. The single group quasi-experimental research with repeated measures after program implementation immediately, for 1-month and for 3-month aimed at studying the effects of educational and promoting self-care behavior program for diabetic retinopathy prevention on clinical outcomes in diabetic patients. The sample of 155 participants were purposively recruited from diabetic patients receiving services at Medical outpatient department of a tertiary hospital. The instruments used were: (1) Educational programs promoting self-care behaviors in diabetic retinopathy, comprised of an educational guidebook to diabetic retinopathy, a promoting self-care behaviors manual for diabetic patients, videos and brochures (2) the demographic questionnaire (3) the knowledge of diabetic retinopathy questionnaire and (4) the self-care behavior for diabetic retinopathy questionnaire. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, Repeated Measures ANOVA, and Paired t-test. The results revealed that after program implementation for 3 months, the mean scores of knowledge and self-care behaviors for diabetic retinopathy increased significantly
(p<0.001). The mean glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), systolic blood pressure, cholesterol, HDL and LDL were improved significantly (p<0.05, 0.002, 0.001, 0.001, 0.017 respectively). This educational program should be used for patients in diabetic clinics to help delay the onset of diabetic retinopathy.
