Abstract

Abstract: This experimental research design, two groups pretest-posttest design, aimed at examining the effects of the Self-Efficacy Enhancement of Foot Care Program on foot care behavior and insensate foot among patients with type 2 diabetes. Eighty persons with type 2 diabetes, from two health care centers in Bangkok passing inclusion criteria, were randomly selected to participate in this study and divided into an experimental group receiving the Self-Efficacy Enhancement of Foot Care Program for 12 weeks and a control group obtaining routine nursing care with 40 participants in each group. Before and after the program, data were collected using two questionnaires, including a demographic characteristic and a foot care behavior questionnaire, and assessing insensate feet. The findings revealed that after participating in the Program, the experimental group had significantly higher average score of foot care behavior than before the program (t= -22.93, p < .001) and the control group (F = 596.17, p <.001). Moreover, the average score of the experimental group’s insensate foot was significantly better than before the study (t = -3.19, p < .01). Unfortunately, it was not significant when compared with the control group. The findings suggest that the Self-Efficacy Enhancement of Foot Care Program can apply to patients with type 2 diabetes to prevent insensate foot and foot ulcers.
