Effects of Play and Sensory Integration on Behavior Problems of Preschool Children with Severe Autism Spectrum Disorder

Abstract

The purpose of this one group time series design study was to compare the behavior problem of preschool children with severe autism spectrum disorder after using play and sensory integration. The sample was 14 severe autistic children and have behavior problems 3 – 6 years old and 14 caregivers. The sample were selected by purposive sampling The children received a 4 weeks program of nursing therapeutic care for children by an advanced practice nurse and caregivers provided by a psychiatric mental health nurse. The instruments in this study were a manual of nursing therapeutic play and sensory integration, and behavior problem assessment scale. Data were analyzed by percentage, mean, standard deviation and ANOVA. The result showed that the reduction in behavior problems of severe autistic children immediately after the intervention and 2 weeks after the intervention (p < .05). Play therapy and sensory integration for behavior problems in children with autism could be used for nursing intervention to reduce behavior problems in children with autism.
