บทคัดย่อ

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of hyperthyroidism in hospitalized patients with atrial fibrillation in Somdejprabuddhalertla Hospital and assess patients characteristic, clinical description of hyperthyroidism in atrial fibrillation patients.

Methods: This is a retrospective, descriptive study of atrial fibrillation patients who were admitted at Somdejprabuddhalertla Hospital during 1 January 2013 to 31 December 2013. Statistic analysis was used to identify patients characteristics, clinical description and incidence of hyperthyroidism included the results of thyroid function test in atrial fibrillation patients.

Results: The hospitalized patients with atrial fibrillation were 205 cases. Patients revealed were atrial fibrillation and had performed thyroid function test 68 cases, 36 males (52.9%), 32 females (47.1%). The mean age was 69.84 ± 14. Hyperthyroidism was 20.6% (14 patients). Newly diagnosed atrial fibrillation was 66.2% (45 patients). The incidence of hyperthyroidism was 6.83%. The patients with hyperthyroidism had more symptoms of atrial fibrillation (85.7% vs 48.83%; p = 0.022) and had more higher heart rates (117.29 beats/min vs 103.3 beats/min; p = 0.016) than atrial fibrillation patients with euthyroidism.

Conclusions: The incidence of hyperthyroidism in hospitalized patients with atrial fibrillation in Somdejprabuddhalertla Hospital was significant, so thyroid function test should be done in all patients with atrial fibrillation. The patient who had symptomatic atrial fibrillation, high heart rate should be highly suspicious for hyperthyroidism.
