บทคัดย่อ

     Obesity of preschool children jeopardizes children’s health. As they grow up, the risks of chronic illnesses; cardiovascular disease, diabetic, hypertention: followed by deformity and mortality lie ahead. Childhood obesity increases the risk of obesity in adult and, therefore a survey was conducted to investigate nutritional status and risk factors of overweight in preschool children (4-6 years) in urban area in Samut Sakhon province.

     The study covered 216 subjects (101 boys and 115 girls). Assessment of nutritional status was determined by weight and height measurements. The nutritional information was obtained from the subjects’ guardians using a set of questionnaire. The results showed that the majority (181 children) was normal weight for height (83.8%). Thirty children were overweight (13.9%) and five children were underweight for height (2.3%).

     Paternal education and income and maternal income were associated with the nutritional status of the subjects were statistically significant. (p = 0.020, p = 0.007 and p = 0.001 respectively) The factors related to childhood overweight were guardianís nutritional knowledge, types of food, dietary habit, and physical activity pattern or exercise were statistically significant (p = 0.000).
