Objective : To study correlation between Hemoglobin A1C level and fasting plasma glucose level, and to compare of glucose plasma level between patient plasma and that calculate from Hemoglobin A1C.

Method : A Cross-sectional (Prevalence) Descriptive Study. Data was collected from OPD card of Nakhonchaisi Hospital during 1 January 2007 to 29 February 2008 and data was analyzed by Correlationl coefficient, Paired-Samples T-Test.

Results : Eight hundreds and twelve diabetic patients were recruited. The average age of patients was 61 years. The mean of diabetic time was 6.6 years. The mean Hemoglobin A1c level was 7.5% and the mean of fasting plasma glucose was 153.42 mg/dl. 44.7% of patient had Hemoglobin A1c <7% and 55.3% of patient had Hemoglobin A1c > 7%, 34.24% of patients had fasting plasma glucose < 130 mg/dl. And 65.76% of patient had fasting plasma glucose >130 mg/dl Correlation coefficient (r) between Hemoglobin A1c and fasting plasma glucose was low and significant correlate (r = 0.433, p < 0.001). The glucose plasma level from patient plasma (mean 153.42 mg/dl) and that calculate from Hemoglobin A1c (mean 188.00 mg/dl) was significant different. (p < 0.001)

Conclusion : The correlation between Hemoglobin A1c and fasting plasma glucose was low and significant correlate. The glucose plasma level from patient plasma and that calculate from Hemoglobin A1was significant different. Both Hemoglobin A1c and fasting plasma glucose should be used to evaluate and monitor for diabetic patients.
