บทคัดย่อ

Objective: To compare the low birth weight infant rate between teenage mothers (aged 13-19 years) and reproductive age mothers (20-29 years)

          Study design: Cross-sectional retrospective study

Materials and Method: 2,165 cases of singleton primigravida women delivering at Photharam Hospital between January 1, 2002 to December 31, 2004 were divided into two groups to compare the low birth weight infant rate. The study group was 757 cases of teenage mothers (13-19 years) and the compare group was 1,408 cases of reproductive age mothers (20-29 years)

Result: Teenage group received less adequate antenatal care (< 4 visit) than reproductive age group (28.3% and 16.5%, p < 0.000). Vaginal delivery was the major route of delivery in both group (82.2% and 63.3, p < 0.01). The most common complication was preterm delivery, and the rate of low birth weight (< 2,500 gm) was higher than those reproductive age group significantly (14.3% and 9.6%, p < 0.001). After controlling for other factors related to low birth weight, poor antenatal care (< 4 visits) was still significantly related to low birth weight infant rate in teenage mothers with odds ratio of 2.15

Conclusion: Teenage pregnant women had less antenatal care than reproductive age group and had higher rate of low birth weight. The relative risk of low birth weight was significantly associated with antenatal care less than 4 visits.
