The objective of this experiment is to determine how much of people who live in the area of Regional Medical Science Centre Samutsongkhram had been using illicit drugs between October to December, 2002. A survey was undertaken from 868 urine samples which were sent to the centre. For the preliminary test we used a commercial kit. A TLC (thin layer chromatography) was a technique which was used for confirmatory test. The results, 501 of urine sample or 57.7% were given a positive result. The most of illicit drugs which were found in the samples was methamphetamine in 466 samples out of 501 or 93.0%. The second most was cannabis which was detected in 14 samples or 2.8%. The next one was the mixture between methamphetamine and cannabis in 12 samples or 2.4%. In term of the mixture between methamphetamine and morphine, 8 samples or 1.6% were found in this analysis. Only 1 sample or 0.2% of morphine was found. According to a gender and age, 94.4% was male who used the drugs compared to only 5.6% of female. The range of age between 21-30 year old was the most risk of using drugs. In terms of career, a worker tended to use drugs more than other careers which was 75.4%. The data of this analysis will be used as a principle to protect and also solve the problem of illicit drugs.
