บทคัดย่อ

Retrospective study on incidence of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) in premature baby was conducted at Pediatrics Intensive Care Unit Nakhonpathom hospital during October, 2001 to September, 2002.

We found that total patients at the Pediatric ICU was 215 patients and 48 of them were premature baby. In these premature baby, 20 of 48 (41.67%) were first parity, 28 of them (58.33%) were female, average gestational age was 31.54 weeks and average birth weight was 1,440 grams. Twenty-six from forty-eight (54.17%) developed ROP and 22 of them had oxygen treatment. Staging of ROP, ten patients were Stage I and four patients were Stage ll with stable disease, ten patients Improved or cured FIOP after treatment and two patients became worse.

When we classified by birth weight, we found that six patients had birth weight lower than 1,000 grams (very-very low birth weight - VVLBW) and four of them (66.67%) developed ROP. 19 of 48 had birth weight between 1,000 to 1,500 grams (very low birth weight - VLBW) and six patients (31.58%) developed ROP. The last group, 23 patients, had birth weight more than 1,500 grams (low birth weight -LBW) and sixteen of them (69.57%) developed ROP. Then we followed these ROP patients and found that one of four WLBW patients (25%) had good changed ROP compared with VLBW patients two from six (33.33%) and LBW patients seven from sixteen (43.75%).

This study suggested that the cure rate on Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), which developed on premature baby during admit pediatric ICU, depend on birth weight of premature baby although the relationship between incidence of ROP and birth weight of premature baby are not cleared as in other study.
