บทคัดย่อ

Patients who had Plasmodium falciparum malaria infection with coma at admission or progressive loss of conscious during treatment with intravenous quinine or with 10 percent or more of the erythrocytes infected, with complication such as jaundice, acute renal failure, acute pulmonary edema or circulatory collapse, were treated by exchange transfusion. The protocol required 4,000 ml. of whole blood. The exchange procedure was simple and could be done at any medical ward. Eleven patients with severe P. falciparum malaria infection had completed the exchange protocol. Ten patients recovered rapidly and were discharged after 6 days of admission in average. One of the patients died because of delayed exchange transfusion.
