บทคัดย่อ

Steroid is a drug intended to be mixed with herbal drug to potentiale result of treatment. But they have various side effect such as Osteoporosis, Peptic ulcer with possible perforation and hemorrhage etc. Steroids are designated as controlled substances and were prohibit to mix with herbal drug.

A survey research in 2001, 223 herbal drugs collected from Samutsongkhram, Samutsakorn, Ratchaburi, Petchaburi, Prajuabkirikhan, Kanchanaburi and Nakhonpathom provinces were identified for steroid by Thin Layer Chromatography method and confirmed by UV-VlS Spectrophotometer method. The steroid were not found in 22 samples with registration herbal drug but found in 19 samples from 201 samples with non registration herbal drug (9.45%), such as Dexamethasone, Prednisolone and both of them in 11, 1 and 7 samples respectively. It can be concluded that the registration herbal drug are conformed to the regulations, but the chance that consumers may recieve steroid from non registration herbal drug were high. Therefore, prolonged consumption of non registration herbal drug is harmful to the consumers's health. Thus co-ordination among government sector, private sector and consumers are necessary to solve this problem.
