A prospective study of 100 Heroin dependent patients treated on the Methadone program at Department of Psychiatry, Chaoprayayomaraj hospital Supanburi Province was performed during July 1994-June 1995. 98 percent of the patients were male, aged between 21 -40. 47 percent of them were daily workers. Their average incomes were 1,000-3,000 bahts per month. 45 and 46 percent finished primary and secondary school respectively. 77 percent of them have a fair academic records. Most of them played truants when they were in schools and 50 percent of them began taking drugs at the age of 15-20. Their first drug taking were marihuana (56%) and tobacco (18%). The causes of drug taking are 99 percent wishing to experience it. Their current addictive drugs are intravenous  heroin, marihuana and tobacco. It was found that 72 percent of the patients have a family’s back-ground of drug takers. The risk and incentive factors of drug dependence are resulted from the dependent and psychopathic personality disorders which was affected by improper parental bringing up their offsprings such as overindulgence, neglect and overdomination attitudes. The incentive factors for instance : chiId’s domestic environment, indifferent parental concern, broken family, low economic status, being lured by temptation and the addicts’ low education. Therefore, the problem solving of drug dependence should be emphasized on preventing of drug taking by encouraging the children to attain their good mental health and warm family condition so that they won’t try using drugs.
