บทคัดย่อ

One hundred and twenty four patients with acute pericoronitis of impacted mandibular third molar were consecutively divided into two groups. The first group recieved pre-operative antibiotic before immediate removal of impacted teeth. The second group received antibiotic for five days before surgical extractions. The comparison in relation to postoperative pain, facial swelling and trismus were studied on thirty eight patients of the first group and eighteen patients of the second group who succeeded to keep their twenty four hours postoperative appointment. There were no significant difference on the degree of pain, facial swelling and trismus between the two groups (P > 0.05), which firmly supported the idea of immediate removal of impacted mandibular third molar with acute pericoronitis. The early operation can be done safely, at least as safe as extraction of impacted tooth without acute pericoronitis.
