บทคัดย่อ

          There were 16,000 children hospitalized in Chaoprayayomraj Hospital during four years period (October 1989-September 1993) 439 died during hospitalization. (case fatality rate = 2.74%). 57% died in the first week of life and 90% died within the first year of life. Male to female ratio was 1.3: 1.12% of them died within the first day of hospitalization and 64% died within the first week of hospitalization. Mean duration of hospitalization was 8.8 days. Conditions during the perinatal period were the leading cause of death followed by disease of respiratry system, infectious disease, congenital anomalies and disease of nervous system. Prematurity (28%), birth asphyxia (26%), pneumonia, neonatal sepsis and hyaline membrane disease were among the most common cause of death. In order to reduce the mortality of hospitalized children, we should improve antenatal, perinatal and neonatal care.
