การเลิกขวดนมในเด็กเล็กวัย 6 เดือนถึง 7 ปีที่มารับการรักษาแผนกผู้ป่วยนอกโรงพยาบาลพระจอมเกล้า

บทคัดย่อ

          Objective: To study about bottle weaning in children included; age of initiate and success bottle weaning, the number of children who delayed bottle weaning, the understanding and knowledge of caregivers about bottle weaning and the complication of bottle feeding.

          Method: This study was a cross a sectional study. We enrolled children S month old - 7 year old and caregivers who visited in pediatric department of Prajornkloa Hospital in 1^st December 2011- 31^st March 2012. The caregivers were data were interviewed by the special nurses. Descriptive statistic and Fischer's exact test were used for analysis.

          Result: One hundred and seventy children and caregivers were enrolled. Ninety children were male and seventy nine were female. Most children (78%) were delayed bottle weaning; mean age of initiate of bottle weaning was 2.14 years old (ranged > 12-18 to > 18-24 months old) and success of bottle weaning at mean age 2.45 years. Most caregivers lacked of understanding and knowledge of bottle weaning included of age that appropriated for starting and finishing bottle weaning (95.8%) and method of bottle weaning (89.4%). Diarrhea and dental caries were found in bottle feeding children more frequent than non - bottle feeding group significantly (p-value = 0.02 and 0.04 respectively). But delayed speech was not different between both groups.

          Conclusion: Most children were delayed bottle weaning than recommendation and caregivers lacked of understanding of bottle weaning. As a result of the delay of bottle weaning, the children may take risk to dental caries and diarrhea as complications. So it's our responsiveness of pediatricians and others health care workers to give the knowledge about bottle weaning to caregivers both in and out patient department to improve the quality of child-health-care.
