Abstract

Background: Nowadays, Thai physical therapists have limited practices in health promotion. Studies about the factors influencing health promotion practices among Thai physical therapists has not yet been found.

Objective: To explore predisposing factors in terms of attitude, reinforcing factors, and enabling factors influencing physical therapists’ health promotion practices in secondary care hospitals.

Methods: In-depth interviews were conducted with 13 physical therapists (8 females and 5 males, average age of 38 ± 5.10 years) in 11 health service sectors, and 3 focus group discussions were performed for data collection. Data was analyzed by content analysis.

Results: The predisposing factor was a positive attitude toward the health promotion of most physical therapists, which derived from their experiences more than from studying in a bachelor-level program.  The reinforcing factors were “health promotion Indicators” directly for physical therapists, attitude and perception of physical therapists’ roles in health promotion by hospital executives and multidisciplinary team, physical therapists’ knowledge and skills in community, empowerment, behavioral sciences, psychology, and communication. Enabling factors were manpower, budget, and community networking.

Conclusion: The findings of this study should be beneficial for any organization related to the physical therapy profession to develop and support health promotion practices of physical therapists in secondary care hospitals.
