Abstract

Background: International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) is a conceptual framework for describing health and its holistic interaction with components of health. Ubolratana Hospital, Khon Kaen Province needs to gather current health status data of patients with stroke in the district by using assessments based on the ICF.

Objective: To assess health status of patients with stroke in Ubolratana District, Khon Kaen Province in the aspects of body functions and structures, activities and social participation.

Methods: Based on the ICF, 46 patients with stroke (mean age 71.9±9.2 years, mean length of time after stroke 57.9±54.1 months) were assessed the body functions and structures by interview, observation, palpation and passive movement. Their activities and social participation were assessed by using the Stroke Rehabilitation Assessment of Movement as well as the Barthel Index, and the communication and social participation domains of the Stroke Impact Scale, respectively.

Results: The most common problems of body functions and structures of the patients were increased muscle tone of the upper and lower extremities, shoulder joint disorders and abnormal muscle length of the lower extremity. Regarding the activities, the patients had difficulty in moving their extremities and performing the basic mobility in daily life. Furthermore, the ability to participate in social activities of the patients was pretty low.

Conclusion: Patients with stroke in Ubolratana District had health status problems in all aspects of body functions and structures, activities and social participation. These findings should be useful for Ubolratana Hospital for improving service quality to promote quality of life for stroke survivors.
