The Development and Effectiveness of the Hat-Yai Back School Program in patients with chronic low back pain
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Chronic low back pain is a common condition affecting physical, mental, social, and economic conditions. Development of the Hat-Yai Back School Program (HY-BSP) should be able to restore the patient's function.
Objective: To study the effectiveness and the possibility of implementing a HY-BSP program in patients with chronic low back pain.
Methods: Sixty participants were divided into two groups with an equal number of participants. The experimental group received the HY-BSP. The control group received a standard physical therapy treatment program. The assessment including pain level, range of motion (ROM) of the lumbar spine, disability, and quality of life (QOL) was assessed three times (baseline and after two and six months). Seventy-three physical therapists evaluated the possibility of implementing a HY-BSP.
Results: For the HY-BSP group, the improvement of average pain level, disability, and QOL were observed at p<0.001, but there were no significant changes in ROM of the lumbar spine when compared with the control group after 2 and 6 months. The feasibility of implementing the HY-BSP was 86.58%.
Conclusion: HY-BSP is effective in reducing pain, disability, and improving QOL.The implementation of HY-BSP is possible.
