Factors Associated with Anesthetic Complications among Dental Patients Undergoing General Anesthesia at a Dental Hospital

Presently, the number of dental procedures performed under general anesthesia has increased. These procedures involve shared airway management between the surgical and anesthesia teams, thereby increasing the risk of anesthetic complications for patients. This study aimed to investigate factors associated with anesthetic complications in patients undergoing dental surgery under general anesthesia. A prospective analytical study was conducted among 618 patients undergoing dental procedures under general anesthesia using consecutive sampling. Data were collected using an anesthetic complication record form developed by the researcher. The content validity index ranged from .67 to 1.00, and Cohen’s kappa coefficient was .82. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, simple binary logistic regression, and multiple binary logistic regression. Crude odds ratios (COR), adjusted odds ratios (AOR), and 95% confidence intervals were reported, with statistical significance set at .05. The results showed that intraoperative anesthetic complications occurred in 22.80% of patients. After adjustment for confounding variables, endotracheal intubation remained significantly associated with complications. In the post-anesthesia care unit, complications occurred in 79.30% of patients, with age, type of intubation, and type of surgery identified as significant associated factors. Within 24–48 hours post-anesthesia, complications were found in 56.00% of patients, and significant associated factors included sex, age, and endotracheal intubation. Therefore, nurse anesthetists should place particular emphasis on the assessment and close monitoring of older patients, those undergoing prolonged anesthesia, and patients requiring nasotracheal intubation, as these factors were associated with anesthesia-related complications. Such vigilance may help enhance patient safety in dental procedures performed under general anesthesia.
