Abstract

This quasi-experimental research aimed to compare the milk secretion time and milk volume among cesarean section mothers of newborns separated in nursery. The sample consisted of 52 caesarean section mothers of newborns separated in nursery at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Nakhon Phanom Hospital in Nakhon Phanom Province. They were separated into two groups: the group receiving the lactation program and the group receiving regular nursing care. The study was conducted from February to October 2020. The instruments used to collect data were the lactation program, the record of demographic and obstetrics data, the record of milk secretion time and milk volume data, and the test of knowledge on milk lactation. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and independent t-test.

The study results revealed that the milk secretion time of the experimental group was faster than that of the control group with statistical significance (t = -2.22, p < .01). In addition, the milk volume of the experimental group on day 3 after delivery was higher than that of the control group with statistical significance (t = 2.32, p < .01).

The findings pointed out that the lactation program can be used to promote breastfeeding among the cesarean section mothers of newborns separated in nursery in order to increase the breastfeeding rate.
