Abstract

This quasi-experimental study aims to examine the effect of self-efficacy enhancement program on the home accident prevention and the first aid skills for the early childhood caregivers. The sample in this study were the caregivers of the early childhood, aged 6 - 18 months receiving the services at the well-baby clinic at King Chulalongkorn Memorial hospital of the Thai Red Cross Society, and they divided into the experimental group (n = 30) and the comparison group (n = 26). The duration of the study is 8 weeks. The experimental group will participate in activities as according to the program. Instruments for data collection were the questionnaire and the check list for the first aid skill assessment. Descriptive statistics, paired t-test, independent t-test and one-way repeated measure ANOVA were used for data analysis.

The results showed that the experimental group who received the self-efficacy enhancement program had the statistically significant mean score of knowledge and perceived self-efficacy score, in the post-test and in the follow-up step, higher than that in the comparison group (p < .05).However, the early childhood caregivers in the experimental group had the mean score on the first aid skill at the follow-up step lower than that in the post-test (p < .05) but was significantly higher than that of the early childhood caregivers in the comparison group (p < .05).

The program was effective in promoting the knowledge and the perceived self-efficacy of the accident prevention at home as well as the first aid skill in the early childhood caregivers. Nurses should apply this program to the early childhood caregiver participants in the future studies and in the other settings to promote the knowledge of the accident prevention and the first aid in the early childhood.
