The Effect of The Teamwork Program for Preventable Error on Working Performance in The Operating Room, UdonThani Hospital

Abstract

          This pre-experimental research aimed to develop a teamwork program to prevent errors in the Operating Room and evaluate its effectiveness on work performance. Sixty participants were recruited as the study population in the operating room, Udonthani Hospital between April - June 2019. The research instruments included The Teamwork Program for Preventing Errors in the Operating Room, demographic questionnaire, questionnaire on work performance for goal achievement, adverse event record form, observation records for role practice (nursing administrators/nursing staff) and satisfaction questionnaire. These instruments were reviewed by experts, and Cronbach's Alpha Coefficient was tested, resulting in coefficients of 0.83 and 0.86, respectively. Data was collected through survey, records, and observation methods. Descriptive statistics were employed including frequency, percentages, means, and standard deviations. To compare the program's effectiveness, paired samples T-tests were conducted with significantly level at 0.05.

          The results revealed that after participating in the Teamwork Program for Preventing Errors in the Operating Room, participants reported significantly higher score of work performance in goal achievement compared to baseline (Pre = 3.87(SD = 0.61), post = 4.07(SD = 0.60), p < 0.001). No incidence of adverse event. Regarding observations, after the program, nurses exhibited improved role practice (from 98.60% to 100.00%). Participants reported high level satisfaction with the program ( = 4.20, SD = 0.68).

          Based on these findings, it is recommended to promote teamwork skills. The teamwork processes identified in this research should be implemented for new staff to enhance the service quality in the operating room.
