Factors Related to Liver Cancer in the Upper northern part of Thailand

In recent years, liver cancer is still a public health problem in Thailand. Especially in the north east and upper northern part of the country. Liver cancer is a 5th leading cause of morbidity rate and also continue increasingly. Therefore, a case – control study was conducted to study the factors related to the occurrence of liver cancer in the upper northern part of Thailand. All of the samples was admitted in the regional, general or community hospital in the upper northern part between 1 January – 30 September 2010 and were diagnosed to liver cancer, aged over 20 years. Data was collected by interviewing the 136 patients through the questionnaires. It is calculated by using conditional logistic regression. It was founded that the proportion between 2 gender was about 2.8: 1, mean of aged was 57.65 years. The result of this study is indicated that the factors that was strongly associated with the occurrence of liver cancer was alcohol drinking consumption the adjusted OR was 3.488(95%CI0.969 – 12.50) for strongly consumption and 1.241(95% CI0.484 – 3.182) for weakly consumption. The history of helminth infection was also strongly associated the adjusted OR was 5.734(95%CI 2.186 –15.040). It was founded the weakly association between Diabetes Mellitus with liver cancer as well with adjusted OR was 1.266(95% CI 0.417 – 3.849). Based on the result of this study, it was recommended that all hospitals should do blood test for HBsAG to all patients who have been along with alcoholic cirrhosis, hepatitis and diabetes mellitus condition. Develop the media and public relation that hit to the specific target to change the consume habit.
