Study on Correlation between Estimated Fetal weight aged 36 weeks by Ultrasonography and Cesarean Section Risk at Doisaket Hospital, Chiang Mai

Abstract

At present, mother and childbirth safety is promoting. Chiang Mai, Thailand had fetal death rate 6.23:1,000 childbirth in 2008 and increased to 6.89:1,000 in 2009. The descriptive retrospective study attempted to find correlation between Estimated Fetal weight aged 36 weeks by Ultrasonography and Cesarean Section Risk at Doisaket Hospital, Chiang Mai by bringing the data for screening the large fetus and difficult labor risk to plan for the childbirth delivery. Collection of fetal weight estimated by ultrasonography at Doisaket Hospital was performed during October 2009 to April 2011. Large fetal weight was collected and referred to the obstetrician for delivery planning then followed up until the child was delivered. It was found that the 36 weeks woman having fetus with weight more than 90 percentile of the standard fetal weight (>3,099 grams) were 8.28% (27 out of 326 cases). The correlation found 33% of overweight fetuses had transvaginal delivery (9 out of 27 cases) and 67% of them had delivery by cesarean section (18 out of 27 cases). Estimated Fetal weight aged 36 weeks who weighted more than 3,099 grams  had significant correlation with Cesarean Section Risk (=80.92, P=0.01)
