Incidence and Factors Associated with Diabetic Retinopathy in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract

           This research designed as Descriptive and Retrospective study aimed to investigate the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy in diabetic patients and factors associate with adiabatic retinopathy in type 2 diabetes. A total of 840 diabetic patients from Muang Sam Sib district, Ubonratchathani province was chosen to be samples of the study during October, 2006 and April, 2007. The data consisted of diabetic patients, records, complications. Visual acuity, and diagnosis result. Data were analyzed through description statistics, Chi-square test and Multiple Logistic Regression at 95% confidence.

          This study found 44% of sample patients developed diabetic retinopathy of which 38.5% were NPDR and 5.5% were PDR. Factor associated with diabetic retinopathy were hypertension, the duration of having DM, chronic renal disease, level of FBS 180 mg% and body mass index. The most important risk factor is hypertension. The risk factors without statistic Sinitic significance were sex, age, occupation, hyperlipidemia, and visual acuity.
