Abstract

              The aim of this study was to assess relation between low body mass index (BMI) and severity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) at COPD Clinic, Sampatong Hospital, Chiang Mai. The retrospectively study was carried from April L, 2007 to February 28, 2009. The total of 138 cases had been studied; most of the patients were men (62.3%) at average age of 70.6 year old (8.6), 44.3 kg of weight average (10..4X, low BMI 60.0% normal BMI 28.3 and high BMI 11.7” The result showed that the COPD patients with low BMI related to the severity was 5.59 times more than the relation with the normal or high BMI patients. Low BMI in COPD patients is related to low quality of life, poor prognosis, increase the hospitalization rate and also again the mortality independent of the degree of pulmonary dysfunction. Hence nutrition should be concerned in COPD patients.
