Study of HIV adult patients Treated by ARV at Hang Dong Hospital compared to with Chiang Mai Province in Fiscal Year 2004-2006

Abstract

          This is a retrospective study comparing the results of the study of HIV patients by Anti HIV virus. In Hang Dong and Chiang Mai. Data were collected from all patients who registered for treatment by Antiretroviral drugs at Hang Dong Hospital, Chiang Mai since 1 October 2004 – 30 September 2006 for 2 years

 The total number of patients treated by Antiretroviral drugs in Chiang Mai was 2,021 people, Male 895 (44.3%), female 1,126 (55.7%). The average age was 35.3 years old (14-73 years old). At Hang Dong Hospital there were 115 patients, Male 61 people (53%), female 54 people (47%) and the average age was 37.5 years old (26-54 years old). There were 73 married people (63.4%), 112 were Thai (97.4%), and 98 were working people (85.2%). We can divide the patients into 3 groups:

1. Asymptomatic HIV. Group 6 people (5.2%).
2. Symptomatic HIV Group 33 people (28.7%)
3. AIDS defining- illness 76 people (66.1%)

In the groups, 104 (90.4%) never took Antiretroviral drugs and 11 (9.6%) had taken Antiretroviral drugs at Hang Dong Hospital. In Chiang Mai 1,681(80.1%) never took Antiretroviral drugs and 403 (19.9%) took Antiretroviral drugs.

At Hang Dong Hospital we found 20 people (13.8%) that had Tuberculosis. In the Chiang Mai patient group, 1675 people had the CD4 count ≤ 200 mm,3 and at Hang Dong Hospital, it was 112 people (97.4%).

In Chiang Mai. 2,267 people had high Lipodystrophy, and 1,333people (58.8%) at Hang Dong Hospital had high Lipodystrophy 20 people (36.4%) as a result of taking Anti Retroviral drugs.

In Chiang Mai, 336 people (16.6%) left the study for personal reasons.150 (44.6%) of these people died of the AIDS virus. At Hang Dong Hospital, 21 patients (38.2%) died, 9 (42.8%) of them because they skipped treatment. This study should lead to better care for HIV patients in the future.
