Human ocular thelaziasis in Chiang Rai Province, Thailand: A case report

In July 2005 on visit to the Hoay Mae Poa Heath Center in Payamangrai District, Chiang Rai Province, Thailand, a 25 year-old hill tribe man from a rural mountainous complained offoreign body sensation and itching in his eye. Upon rubbing his right eye, a white threadlike worm came out. Subsequent microscopic examination revealed the worm as female Thelazia callipaeda. The species was identified base on the vulva anterior to the esophago-intestinal junction, the mouth without lips, rectangular buccal cavity, numerous round disk-shape encysted larvae which aligned in a row in the distal uterus. This appeared to be the sixth case of human ocular thelaziasis reported in Thailand.
