Effectiveness of an Empowerment Program for Caregivers Giving Oral Health Care to the Bedridden Elderly, Tha Wang Pha District, Nan Province

The action research was to study effectiveness of an empowerment Program among 126 caregivers who provided an oral health care for the bedridden elderly in Tha Wang Pha District, Nan Province concerning the terms of knowledge, attitudes, skills, and participation. The research instruments composed of a handbook taking care of an oral health and a questionnaire collecting the data before and after the empowerment program. The implementing steps were 1) joint planning among caregivers 2) doing by training with education, practices and using the handbook 3) home visiting and 4) reflecting of the practices. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics. A paired t-test was pursued the comparison of the mean scores of knowledge, attitudes, skills, and participation scores from taking care the oral health in the bedridden elderly before and after the empowerment program. The results revealed that after the implementation of the empowerment program, the caregivers had mean scores of knowledge, attitudes, skills, and participation for care giving of the oral health higher than that of before the empowerment at
a statistical significance level of 0.05. The findings suggested that caregivers for the aging people are enabled to promote the empowerment participation in an oral health care, including other health conditions in the bedridden elderly.
