An Intermediate Care Service to Improve Activities of Daily Living in Patients with Stroke, Spinal Cord Injury and Traumatic Brain Injury in Sarapee Borvorn Patthana Hospital, Chiang Mai Province

The objective of this one group pretest-posttest study was to evaluate the effect of an intermediate care service on daily living activities of patients with stroke, spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury in Sarapee Borvorn Patthana Hospital, Chiang Mai Province. Study population of 69 patients existing in hospital database and medical records, who admitted between January 1st, 2019–September 30th, 2020 were retrospectively collected for their Barthel Activity Daily Living (ADL) index change before and after admission. Analyses of the data were to assess frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations of population characteristics and to compare Barthel ADL index change with study variables by using t-test and One-way ANOVA test. The result showed that the patients were male 73.91%, aged between 15-59 years 56.52%, and had underlying diseases 52.17%, which the most was hypertension 75.00 %. The comparison of Barthel ADL index change in patients who received the intermediate care program was shown statistical significantly increasing of Barthel ADL index 3.94±3.28 in average (p-value<0.05). The patients with no complication had Barthel ADL index change statistical significantly different from the patients with complication (p-value<0.05). The patients with no complication had average Barthel ADL index change 4.43 (S.D.=3.14) while the others with complication had average Barthel ADL index change 1.85 (S.D.=3.16). It could be concluded that the patients with stroke, spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury receiving the intermediate care service in the hospital would develop an ability to perform their activity daily living.
