The Relationship between Knowledge and Awareness of Guardians in Drowning Prevention Among Various Age Groups of Children in the Upper Northern Region of Thailand

This cross-sectional study aimed to examine the levels of knowledge and awareness regarding drowning prevention among caregivers of children under 15 years old and to explore the relationship between these two factors in the Upper Northern region of Thailand. The sample consisted of 424 caregivers residing in eight provinces of Upper Northern Thailand, selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected via online questionnaires between September 2024 and June 2025 and analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation coefficient. The results revealed that caregivers’ overall knowledge of drowning prevention was at a moderate level (57.78%), with a mean score of 8.97 (S.D.=2.18) out of a total of 13 points. The most significant misconceptions identified were rescuing drowning victims by carrying them over the shoulder to drain water and immediately jumping into the water to rescue a victim if the rescuer is able to swim. In contrast, the overall awareness of drowning prevention was at a high level (85.85%), with a mean score of 4.51 (S.D.=0.52) out of a total of 5 points.; the highest awareness was related to keeping toddlers and young children within line of sight. Furthermore, a statistically significant positive correlation was found between caregivers’ knowledge and their awareness of drowning prevention (p<0.05). The findings suggest that caregivers in Upper Northern Thailand require further development of accurate knowledge regarding rescue methods and first aid to correct misconceptions. Relevant community agencies, including educational institutions, hospitals, and local government organizations, should collaborate to promote water hazard management and enhance awareness. Such interventions are essential to elevate the standards of drowning prevention and effectively reduce child drowning incidents in the future.
