Abstract

This cross-sectional analytical study aimed to investigate the relationship between occupational visual performance and light intensity in a jewelry manufacturing plant in Lamphun Province. A sample of 2,037 employees was included in this study. Spot light intensity was measured at the workstations, and the levels were categorized and compared against the standard values (1 to 3 times the standard). Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test and Multiple logistic regression. The results revealed that 58.50% of the sample were female, with a mean age of 33.44 years (S.D. = 5.07). Overall visual performance was found to be abnormal in 54.69% of the participants, with specific abnormalities observed in far visual acuity (36.87%) and depth perception (30.00%). Factors significantly associated with overall visual performance included light intensity and age. Light intensities that were 1 and 2 times higher than the standard reduced the likelihood of visual abnormalities by 21.00% and 23.00%, respectively. Furthermore, employees aged 40 years and older had a 2.15 times higher risk of experiencing visual abnormalities (95% CI: 1.59 - 2.90). In conclusion, light intensities higher than the standard (1-2 times) help promote visual performance, particularly far visual acuity. Therefore, light intensity should be appropriately managed to suit specific work tasks, and routine visual performance examinations should be conducted, especially among employees aged over 40 years.
