Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the monthly clustering of dengue fever cases and climatic factors in Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. Monthly data covering 120 months from January 2015 to December 2024 were obtained from the national disease surveillance system (Report 506) and meteorological databases. The variables included monthly dengue cases, rainfall, relative humidity, and temperature. Descriptive statistics, normality tests, and correlation analyses were performed, followed by K-means clustering to classify months into risk groups. The optimal number of clusters was determined using Silhouette Scores. Results revealed three distinct clusters: Cluster 0 (May–October, high risk) with the highest average number of cases (511 cases/month), associated with high rainfall and humidity; Cluster 1 (February–May, low risk) with the lowest average number of cases (50 cases/month), characterized by low rainfall and humidity but higher temperatures; and Cluster 2 (November–February, medium risk) with moderate case numbers (127 cases/month) and the lowest average temperature. Correlation analysis confirmed that rainfall and relative humidity were significantly associated with dengue incidence, while temperature showed no strong relationship in this context. These findings highlight the seasonal nature of dengue outbreaks in Chiang Mai and suggest that rainfall and humidity are the primary climatic drivers. The results can be applied to strengthen early warning systems, improve resource allocation, and enhance preventive measures tailored to local climatic conditions.
