Non-pharmacological Pain Management in Preterm before Heel Puncture or Peripheral Intravenous Insertion

Preterm babies are more likely to experience pain procedures frequently and continuously since birth until being discharge from the hospital. However, expression of pain in preterm are sometimes difficult to assess and often ignored. The effect of pain exposure each time from the procedure, especially heel puncture and peripheral intravenous insertion which are common treatments in preterm will inevitably lead to harmful effects. The unfavorable effects occur suddenly during pain exposure and cause long term effects to psychological, emotional and student life in the future.
This article aims to present a non-pharmacological approach to pain reduction as this is nurse’s independent role that can be considered to reduce pain for preterm infants as appropriate.
