Abstract

Childhood and adolescent obesity are growing global public health concerns. Its consequences extend beyond increased future risk of non-communicable diseases to include psychosocial well-being and quality of life beginning in the school years. This integrative review synthesized quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods studies published in Complementary Index, CINAHL, MEDLINE, Gale Academic OneFile, Springer Nature Journals, and Biomedical databases between 2020 and 2025. Study quality was appraised using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT). Fifteen studies met the inclusion criteria, comprising 11 quantitative studies, 2 qualitative studies, and 2 mixed-methods studies. The evidence was analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings identified five key issues to guide the development of nursing guidelines for reducing weight-related social stigma among secondary school students with obesity 1) care systems and infrastructure, 2) self-concept and self-worth, 3) implementation in practice, 4) language and communication, and 5) equity and human dignity.

These findings can support relevant stakeholders in developing nursing guidelines to reduce weight-related social stigma among secondary school students with obesity.
