Factors related to Dental caries among Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients in Muang District, Khon Kaen Province

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate factors related to dental caries among type 2 diabetes mellitus patients in Muang district, Khon Kaen province. A cross-sectional analytical study was carried out in 338 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Stratified random sampling method was applied to T2DM in Khon Kaen Hospital and Health Centers during April 10 – May 31, 2012. Dental examination, interview technique with structural questionnaire and medical records copying form were used for data collection. Descriptive statistic and inferential statistic, chi-square test at 95% confident interval of odds ratio (OR), were used to identify risk factors of dental caries among T2DM.
The results showed that 338 patients were female (59.5%), the minimum and maximum age were 35 years and 83 years, respectively (mean = 50.5 + 10.8 years). The prevalence of dental caries was 63.3%. Decay Missing Filling Tooth Index (DMFT) was 6.5 teeth/ person. The prevalence of root caries was 13.0%. Root Caries Index (RCI) was 0.3 roots/person. Univariate analysis of significant factors associated with coronal caries were age, inhabitat, access to dental services, scaling and no symptoms of caries (p<0.05). Whereas the significant factors associated with root caries were dental examination (p<0.05). This study revealed that T2DM in Muang district, Khon Kaen province who aged over 60 years and live outside the municipality trend to increase dental caries.
