Accessibility of dental care among the elderly in Mueang District, Phetchabun Province

Access to health care is an important component and performance indicator of health system. A cross-sectional descriptive study aimed to access level, identify factors related to access to dental care services of elderly in Mueang District, Phetchabun Province and compare the access to dental services of elderly in municipal and non-municipal area. The samples were 361 elderly; 111 in municipal and 250 in non-municipal areas. The samples were sampled by stratified random sampling technique. Questionnaires (IOC = 0.6-1, Cronbach ’s Alpha Coefficient = 0.806) were used to gather the data which were analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics by using a stepwise multiple regression analysis. The results revealed the most of the elderly (83.5%) retained their natural teeth and the average number of teeth was 16.48. The majority of 71.5% of the elderly had no dentures. Access to dental care services among the elderly in municipal and non-municipal areas and overall were at moderate level. Acceptability was evaluated at the highest score. Availability was evaluated at the lowest score. Living area predicted 5.13% of access to dental care service. This study suggests that providers should establish Primary Care Cluster (PCC) for denture treatment to the elderly and present caring for the elderly to district health board for sharing resources.
